Watch this hard-hitting Grit TV interview. I was so disturbed as I listened to this. It hit me that there has been a tremendous drop in libido, not just in my personal life or because of aging or whatever, but across all age groups, genders, races, what have you, in this country. The explosion of libido in the 60's was the primary engine of change in this country then. Now Americans are paralyzed with fear and sex is considered pathological except within narrow definitions.
Dagmar Herzog lays the blame for this at the feet of the religious right. I am going to order her book, Sex in Crisis, because I am hearing something I can use to tackle my own problems with sexuality as an aging woman and that may suggest ways of restoring libidinal bonds, not just for me but for the many who have become sexual cripples.
Just hearing these two women talk about sexuality in this way has started a small revolution in my mind. I knew something was missing from the discourse on sexuality you hear these days, and Prof. Herzog has provided that.
Far from feeling like "sexual cripples", some of us finally feel free to be humans without the sexual baggage. Free! Free! Free!

And yet there is the longing for love and connection.
