This is how the tsunami looked from our perch in our neighbor's yard across the street. If you look hard, you can see the volcanic plume from the Puu oo eruption in the background.Downtown is on the left. The third cove down, partly hidden, is Honolii, the best surfing beach on the island.
It's nice to know we are prepared for the time when we really are in danger! More action over Coconut Island way across the Bay, where the water is receding and rushing in, coming higher each time, and this could go on for several hours.
So far looks like a dud. Thank goodness! But the warning hasn't been lifted yet, so I'm not relaxing until Civil Defense gives the all clear. Overall, I'm glad we are so well prepared!
Thanks for your concern, everyone!
Lots of little boats out in the Bay now. They are leaving the Harbor for safety. Whales spouting away, seem oblivious to danger! All our neighbors are staying put, because we are safe here. We have water, plenty of food, including lots of bananas and avocadoS1
Will post from time to time but must limit internet use in order to keep lines open for emergency personnel.
Tsunami warning at dawn, 6 a.m. Loud, piercing sirens. We're going to sit tight. My worry now is for the whales. The Bay is full of whales and it's a nursery right now. I saw a juvenile whale yesterday, jumping clear out of the water.
Looks not as bad as I feared. This won't be like the 1960 tsunami. Now I understand why the Japanese family who built our house built up 150 feet from the water and put in a double retaining wall! The whole thing gets on my nerves, though.
Tsunami advisory after big earthquake in Chile. Our house is out of the tsunami zone and 150 feet above sea level. Still, I'm plenty worried. It's been almost 50 years since the last one, and there would be so much property damage downtown and along the Bayfront.
If it hits it will be around 11 a.m. our time.
Why does this ostensibly serious person, moi, have such a juvenile sense of humor? Mad Magazine* and Bob and Ray are to blame. The 50's were notably humor deficient, and I took my pleasures where I could. Maybe the next time I'm laid up I'll listen to all the programs they did that are now available online!
