I have long suspected that our leaders are petrified with fear. They no longer can dictate what's happening at home or anywhere else in the world. Visions of anarchy terrify them. They fear for their very lives. They want us the public as scared as they are in hopes that they can keep us subdued. Wikileaks has them beside themselves. They want secrecy; they can't have it. This is supposed to be a democracy.
And why the mounds and mounds of secret information? Are they ashamed or something? Don't want us to know the slimy things they've been up to in our name? The money they have to throw around? The contempt with which they describe leaders of other countries while thinking so highly of themselves ? The detention of innocents incongruously coupled with the protection and even praise of chislers and killers?
Glenn Greenwald is right to sneer at the press for their role in this fiasco. They know that most of us, lazy and complacent as we are, and convinced that such matters aren't really our business, won't bother to go directly to the source but will accept their redacted versions of Wikileaks. So Wolf Blitzer, Fox News and Sarah Palin will tell us what to think. Just continue about your little rounds and lead your unimportant little lives, John and Jane Q. Public. They'll manage your opinions for you. We should very angry that we are being patronized in this fashion by our presumed betters.
How did this happen to us? Aren't we entitled to know what our government is up to? The way it looks to me is we have handed our country over to the worst people: cowards, opportunists, murderers. No wonder Obama has become a ditherer. He has to be beside himself. I even believe that, as some disobedient press person leaked, Ms. Obama told Ms. Sarkozy that her life in the White House was "Hell." The revelations about Hillary Clinton shock me, too. She's got no morals. I mean I am profoundly disillusioned about her. I trusted her. I guess the murders of those nuclear scientists in Iran are her responsibility.
Now we can go lalalala and ignore all this, but we will have to pay. We can't plead ignorance. It's on our shoulders.
