I liked Melissa Harris Perry's piece in the new Nation. She says that the "Negro" that America is comfortable with is someone whose ancestors were brought over from Africa and enslaved. Obama, however, was the son of an elite Kenyan; he even knows his African relatives and has visited their village. On the American side of his heritage, he is a white Middle American. The dissonance this sets up just drives the Birthers crazy. She compares this heritage with that of Michelle Obama, whose background is the familiar one to Americans.
Anyone remember Air America? Anyone remember Randi Rhodes?
In 2004, Rhodes joined Air America Radio, bringing The Randi Rhodes Show to a national audience for the first time. ... On Fridays, Rhodes opened the show with the song "Bounce Your Boobies" by Rusty Warren. With her distinctive Brooklyn-Queens accent, she would take calls spanning the political spectrum, aggressively promoting her views. (Wikipedia)
Rhodes blamed Nader for Gore's defeat in the 2000 election. My feeling was that Gore lost that one fair and square and would not have needed Nader's help. She self-styled herself as the Goddess of Radio who really knew how to do talk shows, in the way Rush Limbaugh did. She felt that the Left needed to be more kick-ass. The problem was that her target audience was not half-crazed angry white guys. On the left, the wonks have won out. Rachel Maddow was on AA too, and now has her MSNBC program.
Politics and the media. What an exhausting business it is. And it goes on and on and on...
It’s been almost 250 years since Americans last had to debate the question of the monarchy seriously, so it should be no surprise that some would be a little rusty. Here’s a refresher. Having a royal family establishes inherited privilege at the heart of your system of government and embeds patronage at the center of your politics. Our upper chamber is still the House of Lords. People pay taxes to “Her Majesty’s Revenue”; if you win an election, you become “Her Majesty’s Government”; if you go to court, you face not the “people” but the Crown. All of this is of course primarily symbolic. The trouble is, it’s symbolic of something quite terrible—the notion that our head of state gains the position not by merit or election but by birth. In Britain, no matter how aspirant a parent is, nobody buys their kid a T-shirt that boasts Next King of England because the job is never up for grabs.
Didn't we at one time have a Revolution against the Mother Country? Do we really believe that mediocrities deserve to be rich and famous while ordinary British people are getting poorer and poorer? What's in it for us? Aren't we a democracy, sort of?
And I have a rather depressing read here: Never Say Die: The Myth and Marketing of Old Age, by Susan Jacoby. She is emphasizing the experiences of Boomers as they age. I'm not quite on board with a lot of her analysis but think she makes good points. Old age catches up with us all, eventually, should we be so lucky, no matter whether we have been profligate grasshoppers or virtuous ants. So seize the day!
Sorry to be just re-tweeting right now, but I'm way behind on things and somewhat tired. Anyway, this column by Pollitt is very good and suggests a charity that actually does what Mortenson claimed to be doing. Pollitt is concerned that Americans may go from being too easily duped to becoming overly cynical about aid to the poor in places like Afghanistan. RichardKimNYC Richard Kim What a sharp, smart column from @KathaPollitt about Greg Mortenson and why America fell for him. http://tinyurl.com/3ej6jdx 30 minutes ago Favorite Undo Retweet Reply
Update: The link does not seem to work. I'll try to fix it.
Hmm. It occurs to me that many Mainlanders seem not to believe that Hawaii exists. If Hawaii does not exist, no one was ever born here. Therefore, Obama's birth was faked, and he does not exist.
It's simple logic.
Serious questions continue to arise as to the actual existence of President Obama,

Demand to see a map of Obama's genome sequence. Only that will settle question of whether Obama was born at all! #cylonpresident #birther
