Mayoral candidates on the Big Island debate on the controversial TMT (Thirty Meter Telescope).League of Women Voters of Hawaii Island extended invitations to all 13 candidates, as is consistent with our nonpartisan policy toward candidates, and 11 of them participated. You can see for yourself that our island has fair numbers of unusual people. Be sure to read the comments! David Corrigan and Big Island News are major assets, and this vid is invaluable.
I'm voting for Harry Kim, ex mayor and the most decent man I have ever encountered in politics. In addition, he is well educated, competent, experienced and believes in science!
A lot of planning went into this debate. The infighting and jockeying for position were even worse than the time I ran a League debate several years ago, and I thought that was the limit! The most offensive person came to every meeting, criticized everything, forced debates on trivia, riled up the moderator by implying that we were incompetent and ended up not helping at all but posting a lot of photos she took on her e-mail. Furthermore, she violated an unspoken agreement that her organization, debate co-sponsor AAUW, would share the costs of the debate; they did not contribute a penny but strived to give the impression that they were really running the show. I suppose the offender is proud of herself for being a "disruptor." Well, she has put herself on my permanent s**tlist.
One of the reasons I keep this blog on the semi-QT is so that I can make remarks like the above!
