It's been great with friends and family, but now I want to process things and get mentally sorted out before rushing off to the next activity. I do accumulate fatigue and need more time (and sleep) to recuperate than I used to.
The air conditioner is making all the difference in our small condo apartment on hot days like yesterday. We are not permitted to install window conditioners (tacky!) but have the kind that has a hose to the outside. It is quite discreet in appearance from the outside. (Middle top window)
From the inside it looks like a suitcase with an exhaust hose attached. It's not a thing of beauty, but when we need it it's a joy.
I walked all the way around the buildings and found only one other AC installation and was puzzled as to why that would be, but then I recalled that when we lived in the Northwest we didn't have AC, and our daughters don't have it. It does not seem like a necessity in the Seattle climate. But this place, small and with huge windows, often gets too warm for comfort in the summer. This a.m. it's cool and overcast! The windows are open to a pleasant breeze.
There was a good article in the German magazine Spiegel, in which the author pointed out that the Germans went crazy over Obama but can't work up much interest in Clinton and are inclined to be indifferent or even downright antagonistic toward her. One commenter said that if Sanders had been 20 years younger he could have won the nomination. As a person who has never fully understood the charismatic appeal of either Obama or Sanders, Clinton's supposed lack of charisma has never bothered me, because it's not a quality that says much about how good a leader a person is. Look at Angela Merkel! She seems so ordinary!
Women are ignoring the edicts of male domination more and more, and this has alarmed a class of men who feel that they are losing out to women. And they are right. They do have something to lose. It's convenient for men to treat woman as an underclass and enraging for them to have to compete with women if that was never their expectation. Note the sourpuss expression on Bernie Sanders's face when Hillary was standing up on that stage accepting the nomination, when even his wife was smiling and clapping.
I watched Clinton's entire acceptance speech and felt that despite the woo woo production values and the phony gloss over it all, something real was going down. But this could be the start of an essay, so will just put up more pix instead. Like they say, the best camera is the one you have in your hand when photo-ops occur.
In Madras, OR we found a place, a chain restaurant, that went somewhat overboard on its bear motif but where we could get a real American breakfast. Terry got these great shots of ursine overkill.
I really appreciated bacon, eggs and hash browns and Terry enjoyed his waffles. The bacon was, as a matter of fact, outstanding. In Bend people eat a lot of raw foods and tahini, etc. and are very athletic and weight conscious. The mostly raw foods low fat vegetarian diet favored by the super fit, especially when combined with a lot of wheat products, does not agree with me at all.
It's later in the day and now too hot. Glad for AC.
