I put my hand down on the computer desk, and it was wet! We have had inches and inches of rain. When I came home yesterday from ceramics class, there was a huge puddle on the grass strip down by the road. Around 3 p.m. the downpour intensified, and many bolts of lighting struck near here. One of them shook the house so hard I thought it was going to jump off its foundations. All is quiet today. The storm has moved on to Oahu.
I just read a review of Tama Janowitz's new book, Scream. Never having read anything by her and unaware of her brief moment of celebrity, I downloaded her best-seller, Slaves of New York, which I am gleefully devouring. It's full of great one-liners, like these:
...there are no convents for Jewish girls.
Bob was both sadist and masochist to me, for him I was madonna and whore.
I was always older than my brother..
And so on.
No woman who writes in unflattering terms about men, as she does, could possibly maintain her popularity for long. As she ever so accurately points out in a 2013 interview in Tablet Magazine, the other "brat pack" authors are no longer being read either, and she opines that soon no one will be reading David Foster Wallace. Read any David Foster Wallace lately? Most people don't read books anyway, as she says.
I also watched old videos of her attempting to flirt with David Letterman. Her habit of looking rather stern or out of it and then smiling in the most fetching way could confuse even the most hardened roué. And her get-up! Well...I see echos of her in the female impersonator Dina Martina. Dina is no threat to the male gender, however, and Tama Janowitz certainly is.
She is way younger than I am and likes money and stuff.
This brings me to junk food. The Sunday Times has a laudatory article about a certain kind of potato chip. I relate to this. At our last Nation Magazine meeting a member brought these:
I thought they were the best thing I had ever eaten. So seductive in their spicy crunch. I bought a bag. I ate a few of them and realized that they tasted disgusting. The Donald Trump of snack treats. How could the same taste buds have come to such different conclusions? I guess they only taste fantastic if you are really really hungry.
Herewith some photos of junk food, booze, soft drinks and cigarettes taken at Cost U Less in Hilo, Hawaii. It's so hard to make ends meet these days! Luckily, gas is still cheap.
Janowitz's writing style is very contagious. I do tend to "catch" writing styles this way. One thing I really agree with her about is that there is all kinds of interesting stuff around, no matter where you are.
