We're voting AGAIN that we don't want homeless people around this November 8. City measures of various content offer us this opportunity every few years. This time we are making tents on sidewalks illegal. Tents on sidewalks are already illegal. The police don't always remove them, because ... hey ...what are you going to do?

The solution to homelessness is well understood to be housing the unfortunates -- after that, various other measures help, like mental health treatment and even job training. But housing has to come first.

As a society, we aren't willing to pay to do what needs to be done.

Jan: Yes, housing first. A place to sleep, clean up, store your personal possessions. It's elementary.

Today's NYT has an article on the situation around the 60,000 or so homeless in NYC.
