Obama is racing against time to shore up what he can.

Meanwhile, http://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2016-12-29/rodrigo-duterte-calls-american-envoys-in-philippines-spies

He can talk all the wants, but it's just bravado. With our huge military presence there?

Hattie

This is probably all true.

We pretty much pulled our military out of the Philippines under President Clinton. Nobody seemed that worried about opening the door to China to take over then.

Hattie

Yes, you are right, but what about this?

More: I see how it works. The way it's set up, troops don't have to be on the ground but can move right in on short notice.

Yes it looks like we wanted to set up facilities at some Philipine bases in case we had a conflict with China or North Korea. That way we could move troops in quickly. But they had have stopped that. Apparently the current Philipine Government hasn't studied what the Japanese Occupation was like before they were liberated by the US. Maybe next time they need our help we should mind our own business.

Hattie

Ingineer: And you might want to read what Mark Twain said about the U.S. takeover of the Philippines. That said, as they say, I know that the Japanese turned the place into a slaughterhouse, some of this knowledge from first hand reports of people who were there.
Good info about the bases. Well, we don't really have a right to be there, do we.

Brandon

And the Philippines were ruled by Spain for centuries before.

As has been said already, the Republicans tried to block absolutely everything Obama wanted to do. They were utterly ruthless and wouldn't compromise on anything. So Democrats are now entitled to do exactly the same and block Trump every which way. Bad losers? No, just plagiarising the Republican rule book.

Hattie

Nick: Yep. Putting some of our worst characteristics to work in the service of righteousness can be downright fun! Let's not be good sports! Let's not be willing to compromise. Let's sulk, be balky, ruin their plans! Even the lazy can participate with well honed passive aggressive techniques, the cutting remark, the quiet sabotage. Let's fight to win at all costs!

How could providing contraceptives help the economy? Are (or were) these people for real?
